Today's album — Simon Magus's The First Year of Catastrophe.

Leaning towards the doomy side of things, Simon Magus is heavy rock with a groove. What draws me to them, specifically, is how they hit on several bands that I've had a fondness for over the time. The music feels a bit like Warp Riders from The Sword mixed with Black Pyramid, and the Wes Allen's vocals have been some of my favorite since The Highgears.

Today's album — Wolves of Winter's Wolves of Winter.

This debut album, a revamped version of their demo, is a hard rocker. The album is grunge, stoner, doom, and a whole lot of attitude. \

Today's album — Venomin James's Unholy Mountain.

This album was a LONG time in the making. In the process, they lost their drummer (RIP, Jared) and their vocalist between the recordings and release. The wait seems to be worth it because this is a killer album, and a proper send-off to the original lineup.

Free-kin' Weekend: Sonora Ritual – Dust Mountain

Free-kin' Weekend

In the name of all that is (un)holy, it's the weekend! It's time for beer, music, more beer, and more music. With that bar tab you're racking up, you have less and less money to spend on music; I know the feeling. That's why you get a second dosage of free music, so crack open another beer (or pour yourself another glass), and download this gem.

My offering to you is Sonora Ritual's latest album, Dust Mountain. I'll be honest, I haven't given this album as much attention as I should have. I've been making up for that this week. You'll want to catch up, as well. Continue reading Free-kin' Weekend: Sonora Ritual – Dust Mountain

Review: Elbrus – Elbrus

Elbrus - ElbrusGoing through emails is always a mundane task, and it's one that I can't get great enjoyment out of it. There are exceptions, of course; I always pay attention when I see something from Kozmik Artifactz. When I saw the email about Elbrus signing with them to release their debut album, I immediately opened it to see the description of the band and then flagged it for follow-up.

Thanks to "The Huntsman", I was quickly convinced into listening the album a bit sooner than intended. I ended up kicking myself a little for even taking that long to listen to Elbrus. Continue reading Review: Elbrus – Elbrus

Review: Buddha Sentenza – Semaphora

buddha sentenza - semaphoraAs much as I enjoy instrumental rock (I do), a common issue tends to hold back my enthusiasm. Yes, that one. There always seems to be a general theme that all the tracks on an album are the same. The repetitiveness gets old and fast. As a result, I don't seek out instrumental music as a whole.

I think you know where I'm going with this, of course, there are exceptions to this. For me, the latest from Buddha SentenzaSemaphora, is one of these exceptions. Continue reading Review: Buddha Sentenza – Semaphora

Review: Entierro – Entierro

Who says there's not any uniqueness in music left? Yeah, I have been one to say this on more than one occasion. What there is to be done has to be done, right? Right. Well, Entierro challenge this claim with their eponymous EP.

I wasn't sure what to expect from this EP. Giving the music a listen didn't really help either, at first. It took a minute before I could wrap my head around what I was hearing. Continue reading Review: Entierro – Entierro

Review: Desert Storm – Omniscient

desert storm - 2015 - omniscientIt's always an honor to get to write about a band that's been following my projects (and/or myself) since the early days. Nearly 5 years ago, I received Forked Tongues, the sophomore album from UK heavy blues and doom rockers, Desert Storm. One of the few early submissions I remember from The Soda Shop. 5 years and 2 full-length releases later, I still perk up when I see a new release from this 5-piece. I'm excited to have the chance to get an early lesson on should be another great effort.
